Interview with Zsolt Bedak

Zsolt, how did the fight go?

The first few rounds were fine and I did very well. In my corner were Artur Grigorian and Michael Timm. Both trainers told me I shouldn’t slug with him, but be calm and outbox him. I did that initially. But after the fifth round, I couldn’t maintain these tactics. Unfortunately I left the right path.

Why did this happen?

I don’t know. There was chaos in my head. I didn’t do what my trainers told me so I’m very disappointed.

What happened to your jaw?

After an uppercut from Vazquez in the fifth round my left jaw was broken. I continued to fight, but I didn’t feel any adrenaline in my body and my cheek was swelling up. I spent the night in the hospital. But everything isn’t so bad. I’m coming back!

Did you ever think you could no longer win?

No. I’ve always thought I could win. I wanted to knock him out, but that was probably wrong. I should have listened to the trainers. They always said ‘Zsolt, relax and do good defense. Stay loose and you’ll be hard to hit.

Were you crying after Artur Grigorian threw in the towel?

Yes, I was. Naturally I was sad as this fight was a huge opportunity. I’d like to directly thank Klaus-Peter Kohl, Dietmar Poszwa, Artur Grigorian, Michael Timm and Fritz Sdunek who wrote out my training plan. Thank you Universum, thank you to my family, thank you my country, my friends, everyone who supported me. My brother Pal was at ringside. I appreciate that he could come along. He made me stronger and gave me additional energy. He was very flustered, but we’ll move on. It’s too bad. So I’m very sad because I wanted to give a victory to all these people.

What happens now?

Dietmar Poszwa told me to continue to box. I just have to learn from it. I now know what I should do differently. My trainer told me that I must learn from my mistakes and I can be a champion. This I will do. I want to be the fourth Hungarian world champion. And my brother Pal will be the fifth champion from Hungary. First I’m going home to my family in Budapest in order to recover. Then I’ll goes to Stuttgart. My brother is boxing there on July 3. I’ll strengthen him in the ring, just as he did for me.
