Nathan Cleverly set for world title

« Back

European light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will fight an eliminator for the right to take on WBO title holder Jurgen Braehmer.

Cleverly, 23, is currently ranked third by the WBO and will face another unbeaten fighter Karo Murat, ranked number two, later in the summer. Promoter Frank Warren is keen for the fight to take place in Cardiff.

Cleverly's Welsh compatriot and fellow European champion Enzo Maccarinelli would figure on the undercard. Maccarinelli, who took the vacant European cruiserweight title with a first-round knock-out of Alexander Kotolobay last month, is likely to face mandatory challenger Alexander Frenkel.

Murat has previously held the European super-middleweight title, but stepped up a division to claim the vacant WBO inter-continental light-heavyweight title against Sergey Demchenko last August. The German has since made two successful defences, stopping Guyana's Sean Corbin in two rounds and then winning an unanimous decision over American southpaw Tommy Karpency. Cleverly has previously named Demchenko as a possible opponent for his first European title defence, but will now battle it out with the Ukrainian's conquer for bigger prizes.

The fight will take place after he finishes his final exams for his maths degree at Cardiff University.
