Unbeaten WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) won an uninspiring twelve round unanimous decision over WBO #10 rated upstart Artur Akavov (16-2, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Paisley Lagoon Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
In his first title defense, Saunders failed to impress as Akavov gave as good as he got for the first seven rounds. Saunders finally came on in rounds eight to ten, but Akavov closed the fight stronger. Scores were 116-113, 116-112, 115-113.
After the fight, Saunders admitted it was a “terrible” performance. “Tonight was really, really flat,” he said. “I’d like to apologize to the fans…on that performance my name shouldn’t be mentioned with Golovkin and Canelo!”
