Huck dethrones Ramirez!

« Back

Marco “Käpt’n” Huck (26-1-1, 20 KOs) is a new WBO cruiserweight champion following an extremely hard-fought unanimous decision over tough Argentinean plodder Victor Emilio Ramirez (15-2, 12 KOs) with the scores: 116-111 (twice) and 115-112. The bout ended moments ago at Gerry Weber stadium in Halle, Germany.

Huck started the fight actively and used multiple combinations, including a powerful single right, to take the first couple of rounds. It seemed as if Ramirez wasn’t ready for such a quick start from his WBO #2 challenger but he finally found his rhythm in the third. Ramirez just marched forward behind the block, firing approximately zero jabs and then tried to put his rival to sleep with extremely powerful left and right hooks. Rounds three and four were in his favor as the Argentinean was able to frighten Huck a bit and tag him several times with his power shots. The middle rounds were close; the more balanced German being able to adjust to Ramirez’ roughhouse tactics and to counter him with fast combinations with the special accent on his left uppercut. Both fighters, however, saw no crucial success until the ninth, when it became obvious Ramirez’ fuel was rapidly ending. The rest of the fight was more in Huck’s favor though Ramirez kept his dream alive till the final bell. He was also inspired by the point deduction from the local fighter for continuous low blows, issued by referee Mark Nelson. In round twelve, Ramirez came out blazing but it turned out it was too little and too late for him to retain his belt. A magic night for Marko Huck and a strong perfromance by the ex-champion in a memorable fight. Fightnews saw it 114-113 for Huck. The Argentinean left the arena extremely disappointed with the judges’ verdict.
