Sukhotsky wins WBO European light heavyweight

« Back

Rising prospect Dmitry Sukhotsky (14-0, 9 KOs), now competing at 175 lbs, looked like a crushing machine yesterday night at Atmosphere night club in St. Petersburg, Russia, and did a brilliant work to extend his series of stoppages with the eighth round TKO over Spaniard Juan Nelongo and to acquire the vacant WBO European light heavyweight title.

This is the fifth recognizable belt, captured by 28-year-old Barnaul native, following the national, TWBA, WBL and WBC CISBB titles, all in super middleweight division.

Sukhotsky started to press his older opponent from the opening bell and continued throughout the whole fight, going to the close quarters behind his solid jab. Nelongo, 39, used his vast experience to stay in the fight but each round was coming more and more difficult for him. In the fourth and in the fifth stanzas Sukhotsky was close to finish the Spaniard off but the guest fighter managed to weather the storm. However, the bout soon became a one-sided Dmitry’s onslaught, which was wisely stopped by referee Nikolay Puchkov in round eight despite the fact that Nelongo (now 21-9-1, 9 KOs) had never been down.

“Dmitry looked good tonight in spite of a slight illness before this bout,” said matchmaker and former EBU bantamweight champion Alexander Yagupov. “He failed to deliver a finishing blow but he was solid in other departments. We hope to make him a couple of defenses before stepping up and challenging for the world title”.
